The scholarly journal associated with the Military History Center, Military History of the West, was established in 1961 under the title Texas Military History. Published originally in Austin, Texas, by Military History Associates and Jay A. Matthews Jr. and supported by the National Guard Association of Texas, the publication has experienced three name changes. The various titles have included Texas Military History (1961-70), Military History of Texas and the Southwest (1971-88), Military History of the Southwest (1989-92), and Military History of the West (1993-present). The University of North Texas acquired the journal in 1988 and has published all volumes beginning in 1989.
Military History of the West publishes refereed scholarly articles on all chronological periods and all aspects of military history (e.g., war and society, biography, operations, military institutions, military archaeology, etc.) connected with the American West (i.e., from the Mississippi River Valley west to the Pacific Ocean and from the Spanish/Mexican borderlands to the Canadian border). For example, readers will find articles on the role of women in the making and writing of military history, black soldiers, wartime propaganda, the impact of frontier forts on local economies, air power in the West, and other topics that view military history from the broadest possible perspective. In addition, each issue of the journal includes numerous reviews of books on military history. Manuscripts submitted for publication are evaluated with a "double blind" reviewing process that assures the strongest and most objective scholarly assessments. Articles range in subject matter from pre-Columbian western aboriginal tribes to the space race of the 20th century. Potential authors should submit two paper copies and an electronic copy of their work.
The editors invite manuscripts on any military
topic (from European settlement to the present) that falls within the geographic
boundaries of coverage -- i.e., the Mississippi River valley and all states west
of that line. The journal's definition of "military history" is also
broad and includes the social and economic aspects of military life as well as
strategy, tactics, and operations. For example, readers will find articles on
the role of women in the making and writing of military history, black soldiers,
wartime propaganda, the impact of frontier forts on local economies, and other
topics that view military history from the broadest possible perspective.
Two-year subscriptions for the annual journal are:
