ART 5190: Fashion and Self Fashioning
Denise Amy Baxter
Self-fashioning, or the process by which individuals
actively participate in the shaping of their personal, social, and
political identities, has become a key topic of interest among literary
and cultural historians. This course will explore intersections between
fashion (both physical garments and their representations in art and
literature) and the constitution of the self. Rather than organizing the
course around a single historical and geographical period, we will explore
these issues in a series of case studies. We will also be working in
conjunction with the Texas Fashion Collection. While all of these case
studies will be taken from the history of western art, final papers that
focus on non-western topics are also welcome. Students will be
collaborators in the organization of the course, bringing in readings that
serve their research interests.
