The Civil War @ Charleston web site has just added a new article by Ted Banta of the S.C. Battleground Preservation Trust on this battle on Johns Island, near Charleston, SC on July 6 - 10, 1864.... The Battle is little mentioned in history books because the activities around Richmond and Atlanta get all the attention. This third attempt to take Charleston, SC also failed and the brutality of the fighting is typical of the late war period.

In 1682, Henri de Tonti established a trading post known as Postede Arkansea at the Quapaw village of Osotuoy. It was the first semi-permanent French settlement in the lower Mississippi River Valley.  By 1819, the post was a thriving river port important enough to be selected the capital of the Arkansas Territory. In 1862, Confederate troops constructed an earthen fortification known as Fort Hindman. In January, 1863, Union troops destroyed the fort and adjacent river port town, ensuring control of the Arkansas River.
